The phrase “career growth and development” is open to interpretation. In other words, the person making the decision decides what “growth” and “development” mean. But for our purposes, we’ll say that “growth” is evidence of a good change and “development” is the process of always learning something new.

Again, these are interchangeable and can be extrapolated, but the words show how you’ve moved forward in your career from last year to now and where you want to go.

The good news is that it’s a good time to look for work. The people in charge of hiring are looking everywhere for qualified candidates who are willing to do the job and stay with the company. But that doesn’t mean they’ll hire someone who hasn’t shown growth and development in their career.

If changing careers means starting your own business, potential clients will want to know that you are a go-getter who values growth and development.

So, here are seven tips on how to plan your career growth and development so you can become a sought-after candidate, be successful as an entrepreneur, and reach your personal goals.


1. Accept Changes

Many professionals have a hard time with the idea of change because they think it means giving up on something they’ve already started. Change is also scary, new, and uncertain, so many people try to avoid it.

Change, on the other hand, shows that you are mature enough to know that it will happen anyway, so you are choosing to do something new that will be good for you and those around you.

Good change is a sign of growth and development. Change is how you tell the world that you are moving up, stepping out, or jumping into something better. It also shows that you know that you need to change to build and keep a successful career.

Even if you don’t talk about these things in an interview or your annual review, they can help you feel better about yourself and keep you going in the right direction.

If you want to start a side business, metrics will help you get clients. How about life coaching? Many people are getting into this field because it doesn’t cost much to get started and, well, we’re all experts at something, right? But if you want to get clients, saying you are a “life expert” isn’t enough.

Potential clients want to see proof of your career growth and development, such as certifications, the number of clients you’ve coached so far, and related education and training. And they want to see that you put your clients’ lives and careers on the same level of importance as your growth and development.


4. Growth Doesn’t Always Mean a Raise

So, last year you didn’t get that new title. Don’t think that means they aren’t growing. The most important thing is how far you’ve come. Maybe you’ve learned more, become smarter, more flexible, more self-aware, more mature, stronger, or more respected for the work you do.

Supervisors often praise team members for growing because they can see changes in how they interact with other people and how other people react to them. This kind of growth is praised and valued by most people, but it’s not recognized and rewarded enough. So, it’s important to get feedback and evaluate yourself often.

Growth can, of course, lead to a promotion, a new title, a new role, a new salary, or a new level of responsibility. Remember that growth is proof that things are getting better, no matter how that is defined.


5. Personal change is part of growth

What’s that? That’s how you learn.

Even though you probably wouldn’t put this on your resume, it’s good to know that you’re hardwired to learn. With that in mind, there are a lot of options.

There are a lot of things that can be used for development. From webinars to formal education to YouTube to mentoring, there is no reason why you can’t make a personal development plan and put it into action. It makes you feel good and can lead to new opportunities.
